Autodesk Inventor .. Great software for prototyping ...

AutoDesk Inventor

Here's another great tool for aspiring Independents. Its the AutoDesk Inventor software. Its essentially a 3D CAD/CAM programme but the great thing about the Inventor is that it is able to run simulations. Think about the benefits ! You could design a movement, put the dimensions through Inventor and make it run virtually. You would not need to spend 3 months actually building the parts to know if one thing or another is going to jam up.

And you can't go wrong if Ulysse Nardin uses it for quick prototyping. Read the article here.

And the BEST part.

There is a FREE trial for students ! Click here for details.

Hey there ! Calling ALL watchmaking students ! This is something in ENGLISH and its free for us to try out !!

  1. Would be nice to have! Will you teach your students how to use it?

  2. Hi Aaron,

Thanks for the question. Actually, what do you think ? Should we definately include this in our Full Skill Course ? Or maybe even a short specialist course ? You just finished the course from WOSTEP so you would be in the best position to give us some feedback. We reckon it would be really useful and thats why we are sharing our initial findings with everyone else.

Also, we're actually in the process of reviewing our course structure and syllabus content of the Full Skill Course so we are not sure yet. However, judging from the usefulness of Inventor, we are seriously considering adding it to our course. However, since we're in the stages of review, we are right now considering whether to train the instructors to teach the students or to arrange for students to be trained by external instructors licensed by Autodesk.

But there is a concern though. It seems like a highly complex programme. Would the proverbial watchmaking student be able to master the programme and will we be able to fit this into our course.

Its alot of considerations but they are definately in the works.

Oh ! And please do feel free to suggest ideas and stuff which you think students should know or that we should include in our course ! Like we said earlier, we are currently in the midst of course review and would appreciate the feedback alot !
