Our hairspring machine ... a brief introduction ...

This week, we are going to introduce a rare machine for vibrating hairsprings. This is very very rare. Firstly, you place a balance with a hairspring onto the mount above and let it swing. The machine will measure the frequency via the sensor.

Attached to the sensor in the first picture is this display. Notice the white inner ring and black outer ring with white markers. When the sensor picks up the frequency of the hairspring, it will be indicated on the white ring while the frequency needed will be displayed in the black ring. Once the black ring and white ring has both indicators matched, the sensor in the first picture will automatically cut the hairspring to the right length.

One interesting thing about the sensor is that there is an air outlet which keeps the balance swinging. Its quite a cool contraption overall to observe ..

Prep time ...

When you think boring, repetitive stuff is over, its not ! This is what awaits students when they reach manipulation. The small humble screwblade. You need to prepare them before you can use them or else, if you slip, there'll be a big scratch on the bridges, and disaster !!
